ADVANCES IN WIRELESS COMMUNICATION AND NETWORKING (WiCoN)
15th June to 26th June, 2009
ACCOMMODATION
All the participants from AICTE approved institutions will
be provided with free of charge boarding and lodging
facilities within NITC campus.
ABOUT CALICUT
Calicut is a major centre of higher education, learning and
research in Kerala. It is the hometown of institutions of
national importance including NITC, IIMK, DOEACC, and
CWRDM. Direct trains to most of the major cities in India
connect Calicut. It is also well connected by road to
Mangalore, Bangalore, Ooty, Coimbatore, Cochin,
Trivandrum, etc. Calicut also has an International Airport
about 45 km away from NIT Calicut.
ABOUT NITC
National Institute of Technology Calicut is one of the premier
technical institutions in India. NITC is set in a picturesque
landscape at the foothills of the Western Ghats, located on
the Calicut-Mukkam road, about 22km from Calicut City.
The institute offers eight undergraduate and twenty four
postgraduate programmes apart from Ph.D. programmes
offered in different departments. The institute has excellent
infrastructure in computing, information technology,
laboratories and library including hi-tech Nalanda digital
library. Round the clock internet access is available for all
staff and students.
ABOUT ECE DEPARTMENT@ NITC
The ECE Department offers undergraduate programme in
Electronics and Communication Engineering, graduate
programmes in Telecommunication, Signal Processing,
Electronic Design & Technology, and Microelectronics &
VLSI and research programme leading to Ph.D. Degree. The
major research activities are in the areas of Communication
and signal processing.
COURSE OBJECTIVE
Last fifteen years have witnessed a tremendous growth in
the way people communicate each other. Since its modest
beginning in the 80’s with the analog cellular system and
later in 90’s with the digital cellular systems, wireless
communication systems have evolved from country/
manufacturer specific technologies to organized and
standardized technologies deployed worldwide aimed at
meeting the demand of global markets. While the second
generation cellular systems were capable of supporting only
voice and limited data transfer, the third and upcoming 4G
cellular systems are capable of providing data rates from
2Mbps to as high as 1Gbps. Parallel to the developments in
2G and 3G cellular wireless systems, Wi-Fi and Wi-MAX
standards are evolved to facilitate very high data rate wireless
connectivity to fixed and limited mobility services and the
standardization activities of mobile Wi-MAX, which is
expected to change the wireless world, is at the final stage.
The key technologies that enabled the wireless revolution
are Wideband CDMA, OFDM, Space-Time Coding, MIMO
Systems and their combinations. The signal processing
challenges of today’s communication receivers are
tremendously complex. The course addresses some of the
basics of these technologies, the signal processing issues,
key topics in networking and standardization activities in
current and next generation wireless systems. The course
topics are selected to provide both an overview as well as
some insight into the research issues being undertaken in
this area.
