Short Term Course On Embedded System Design January 04-08, 2010

Organized by
Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur

Hosted by
Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata

Objectives and Introduction

Embedded Systems can now be found in a variety of electronic devices - consumer electronics, home appliances, office automation, business equipments, automobiles, and so on. Design of such a system is no more an easy task, as it necessitates a good knowledge about the available hardware and software platforms, operating systems, interfacing devices, sensors, networking etc. It also requires the knowledge of specification techniques, hardware-software co-design approaches, system testing and verification, along with the upcoming issues like low power design. This course aims at introducing the participants to various alternative design techniques commonly in practice in Embedded Systems.

Scope of the Short Course

The short term course will focus on the principles of Embedded System design. After introducing the fundamentals, It will enumerate various specification techniques. It will be followed by introducing different hardware platforms commonly used in the process along with the factors guiding their selection in a particular application. Various interfacing techniques starting with the simplest RS232C upto Bluetooth will get covered. On the software side, it will introduce the Real-time Operating Systems with issues responsible in the scheduling policies. The hardware-software co-design techniques will be discussed. Hands-on experimentation will be done on 8051 microcontroller based development platform.

Venue

The course will be held at Heritage Institute of Technology (HIT), Kolkata. HIT has been set up by a group of Kolkata based eminent Industrialists and renowned public figures in the eastern fringes of Kolkata. The foundation behind HIT is the Kalyan Bharti Trust. The mission of this trust is to promote education, to nourish the students with rich cultural heritage of India. To be a “Centre of Excellence” in education which, in keeping with the rich heritage of India, will stress the simultaneous development of body, mind and soul and endeavour to create compassionate, responsible and innovative global citizens who are committed to the development of India.
