GEO-SYNTHETIC AND MODERN MATERIALS

Geo-synthetics are increasingly being recognized as an alternative to conventional construction materials in the marine environment. If their applications are properly designed and implemented, they effectively achieve continuity and longevity of the structure as they are flexible in nature. Energy dissipation is another basic feature of such structures. Locally available material can frequently be used in conjunction with the geo-synthetic material as an alternative to conventional rock and concrete structures. In deepening navigation channels, dredging the subsequent encapsulation of dredged material in geo-synthetic containers offers protection for channel banks. Presently in India polymer products are being used in various coastal protection works and in beach reclamation structures such as sea walls, bulk heads, break waters and groins. As Geo-synthetic products further prove their utility, river training structures can also adopt these materials. Geo-synthetic products have many more advantages over traditional elements; with the field efficacy of these materials having been proven all over the world.

OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP

The present use of geo-synthetic materials for coastal applications is limited due to both lack of knowledge on system design and the non-availability of sufficient quality materials. With an increase in the threat of sea level rise due to global climate change, it is necessary to protect our coastal systems with utmost care. The application of modern materials such as geo-synthetics offers significant cost advantages over conventional materials. It is often easier to construct. Realizing these needs and opportunities, the workshop aims to disseminate knowledge on applications of geo-synthetics through renowned and eminent international scientists and engineers. The purpose of the lectures is to encourage the increased use of this technology in coastal applications.

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY MADRAS

Set in verdant wooded surroundings, the campus of IIT Madras offers an ideal environment for the most stimulating research activities. The Institute campus extends over an area of 2.5 square kilometers in Chennai, the political and cultural capital of Tamil Nadu. The IITM campus is a self-contained township with all the facilities of a modern university, situated in wooded surroundings. The workshop will be held at the Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research (IC&SR) building of the Institute. The details of the IIT Madras are available in http://www.iitm.ac.in

CALL FOR PAPERS

Prospective authors are requested to submit an in-depth abstract limited to 1500 words on or before 30 April 2010. The abstract should include the corresponding author’s affiliation, address, telephone, email id, fax and other contact information. It may be submitted either via email or regular mail. The abstracts will be reviewed by the experts and the decision on the abstract will be intimated to the respective authors before 31 May 2010. Priority in the selection of papers will be for field application projects.

LEVEL OF PARTICIPANTS

The Workshop will disseminate information to participants on various aspects of geo-synthetic applications, from their historical origin through to recent advances. Sessions will include significant interaction and cross-learning among delegates. Although primarily directed at coastal protection, other applications of these systems will also be considered.
The participants are expected to have civil engineering background. Scientists and engineers involved in river/ coastal protection systems are most welcome to participate in the workshop. Private agencies are expected to benefit from the lectures on the experiences of key note speakers and delegates.

REGISTRATION

The registration fee for the workshop is US$200. For the registered delegates of ICHE2010, the fee will be US$ 100. For Indian delegates, the registration fee is Rs.9000/-. For the registered delegates of ICHE2010, the fee will be Rs.4500/-To register, complete the accompanying tear off portion of this brochure and post/email it.
