INTER LINKING OF INDIAN RIVERS

 INTER LINKING OF INDIAN RIVERS

ABSTRACT

India is a vast country with great geographical variations even within small regions. The rainfall in our country primarily depends on the largely unpredictable and uneven Monsoons. The uncertainty of occurrence of rainfall marked by prolonged dry spells and fluctuations in seasonal and annual rainfall is a serious problem for the country.  This leads to large variation in the availability of potable water within the country, with some parts of the country facing severe droughts and other parts facing devastating floods. Uneven monsoons have led to the denotation of the river basin in the country as water scare and water surplus. The project of interlinking the rivers in India aims at transferring water from the water scare basins to the surplus ones. The justifications given are that the project would lead to huge development of the country and national integration by removing regional imbalances, generating employment opportunities and increase in agricultural and power productivity. The paper provides a comprehensive study on the subject taking into account the reductionist concept of water surplus river basins. The paper also tries to touch the various aspects of the gigantic project by taking an insight into the resulting environmental disasters that would occur, the cost factor and the technical problems that seems to have been overlooked in the wake of the hype surrounding the project. Based on the above observations the paper tries to suggest a total and thorough study on the implementation of the project and its comparison with the other more realistic projects to achieve the desired goals.
