REVIEW ON THE AERODYNAMIC BEHAVIOUR OF LONG SPAN SUSPENSION BRIDGES

REVIEW ON THE AERODYNAMIC BEHAVIOUR OF LONG SPAN SUSPENSION BRIDGES

ABSTRACT

The study of long-span, cable suspended structures is complex and poses unique problem in analysis, design and construction. The design and construction of such structures should be so as to provide larger service life and lesser cost during maintenance period. This calls for a detailed analysis of these structures using the latest technology and coming up with innovative concept and design. The analysis should be carried out not only for the structure as a whole, but also for the structural components, during construction stage using wind tunnels, to study the aerodynamic behaviour.
This review paper will serve to:
· explain the aerodynamic behaviour of suspension bridge structure; and
· explain the failure of the original Tacoma Narrows Bridge and the modifications made for the design of the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
