SEISMIC BEHAVIOR OF COUPLED SHEAR WALL

SEISMIC BEHAVIOR OF COUPLED SHEAR WALL

ABSTRACT

In tall buildings coupled shear walls provide the required stiffness and strength to resist lateral loading resulting from wind and earthquake effects. The walls are coupled by beams to accommodate openings like doors, windows and corridor. This paper presents the seismic behavior of coupled shear wall. The objective of study was to evaluate degree of coupling, axial forces and moments in walls, shear and moments in coupling beams, maximum interstorey drift and time period with varying number of storey. The study includes analysis of 90 coupled shear walls considering the parameters Depth ( 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25 & 1.5m ) and Span ( 1, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 & 3m) of coupling beams, Length of wall (2, 3, 4, 5 & 6m) and six number of storey ( 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, & 30 ). The analytical model of coupled shear wall is analyzed with the help of FEM based software. The seismic loads are calculated by equivalent static method as per IS 1893 (Part 1)-2002.
