The Department of Biochemistry in Annamalai University was started in the year 1994. Since then department has made rapid strides in both teaching and research activities. The Department runs 2-year M.Sc. Biochemistry, M.Sc. Biotechnology and 5-year Integrated M.Sc. Biotechnology courses in addition to M.Phil & Ph.D programmes. The major areas of research in the department include free radicals and antioxidant defense systems, analysis of medicinal utilities of natural products and development of molecular markers and preventive strategies for diabetes, heart disease and cancer. The members of the teaching staff have earned academic distinctions and awards and have received research grants from several national as well as international funding agencies. The department has signed memoranda of understanding with Johns Hopkins University, USA and National University of Singapore, Singapore and Mitsui Norin Co. Ltd., Japan. It has also exchange programme with the University of Connecticut medical centre USA. Taking into consideration its all around progress the Department of Science and Technology recognized the Department for FIST funding. The UGC also, appreciating its contribution and growth, sanctioned the Department Special assistance programme.

Division of cardiology
The Division of Cardiology was started 15 years ago as a cardiac clinic by the Founder Faculty, Dr. K. Sankaran, the then Professor of Medicine, assisted by Dr. N. Chidambaram, Lecturer in Medicine. It also started a Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic, which functioned in a 5 bedded fully equipped with Coronary Care Unit. The division offers specialty training in cardiology. The division has been actively involved in conducting international clinical trails in collaboration with McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada. Four international clinical trails have been completed and currently three trails are in progress. The Rajah Muthiah Heart Foundation was established by our beloved Pro-chancellor who donated a sum of Rs. 5 Lakhs as seed money to create awareness among the general public about heart diseases and to reduce the socio-economic gradients in the treatment of heart ailments besides setting up high standards of quality treatment. Rajah Muthiah Heart Foundation has also conducted a Cardiac Alert. The division of Cardiology is equipped with the latest equipment for cardiac evaluation.

Call for papers

Research papers of original contribution are invited for oral presentation in the conference.

Paper submission

Authors are invited to send the soft copy of the abstract of their research work not exceeding 200 words in MS-word format. Soft copy should be sent to healthyheart10@rediffmail.com. The abstract should have title, authors name and affiliations, full address for corresponding including fax, phone/mobile and e-mail.

Certificate of merit

The young scientists will be honored with appreciation certificate for their best oral presentation.
