TELEMEDICINE
ABSTRACT
An elderly man, age 84, lives in a rural community in central Pennsylvania. He has a severe case of hypertension and his blood pressure and heart rate must be monitored daily. However, the nearest hospital is one and
one- half hours away, and transporting him to the center for a 5 minute check- up would be inefficient, both in cost and time. Additionally, because of his old age, traveling that far wears him out and nurses are not justified to travel that far of
a distance. What should be done?
Unfortunately, this incident has been reoccurring, especially in undeserved areas. Doctors are unable to provide as high as quality of care as in urban
areas due to the inadequate number of specialists and a decreased level of technology. Think of the cost savings if the patients with chronic conditions –which account for 79 percent of health care spending today - be monitored with digital connections that instantly alert their doctors to a problem.
What if two - way broadband connections could allow physicians to conduct the virtual equivalent of an office visit examination by monitoring a patient’s ECG, blood pressure and other vital signs and talking with the patient while he or she rested comfortably at home, observed by the physician through a video connection to the doctor’s Computer screen?
This is not more future gazing. “Telemedicine” applications like this are being performed right now, but they are rare because getting the broadband connections means expensive private - line connections and costly equipment. Telemedicine and telecare are increasingly recognized as a viable, efficient and sometimes even necessary way of diagnosing and treating patients. They improve access to specialty health care, medical information and resources.
In short: they increase the benefits offered by health service providers, wherever and whenever needed. The need to recognize and develop new ways of providing health care services more efficiently, coupled with major advancements in computing and communication technology, have resulted in the increased use of telemedicine and telecare applications over the past decade.
