MAINTAINANCE AND SCHEDULING OF CANALS BY USING SOMOSIM MODEL
ABSTRACT:
For maintenance of canal a specified automated accurate farm irrigation water supply was designed to maintain constant turnout flow rates from canal delivery system to individual farm fields. Maintenance of canal is needed for effective and economical functioning. After few years of running of canal many maintenance problem rises due to which maintenance become an essential part for further effective functioning of canal. Various problems rising in canal are silting of canals, weed growth, surface deterioration of service roads, breaching of canals due to weak banks, over topping of canal banks.
The simulation is carried out for different types of crops at different stages of growth of crops and for a period equal to base period. Further hydro meteorological data are also needed for the study. The potential evapotranspiration is calculated using Christiansen’s equation. A Software “SOMOSIM” developed by Thirupathi Rao and Jayakumar has been used to simulate the moisture levels of soil in the root zone of the different crops, and also considered the rainfall pattern, to decide the irrigation scheduling in real time basis. The data used for calculation is collected from Distributory Behind Manair-22 (DBM-22), a pilot distibutory of Kakatiya canal, for which most of the needed data are available. The output from SOMOSIM is used as input to the model B2D (Playan et al, 1994).
