MEMS IN SURGERY
ABSTRACT:
This paper discusses the challenges MEMS face in the Medical device market along with current applications.
MEMS the acronym of Micro Electro Mechanical Sensors. These are the devices which use Micro Fabrication Methods to develop moving parts linked to electrical components for detection and actuation. It is a technology developed from the integrated circuit industry. MEMS have found themselves being adopted into wide variety of fields and disciplines. Recently there has been an increase in research activity in surgical applications of MEMS. MEMS have overcome all the difficulties existed in open surgery and MIS because MEMS has the potential to not only improve the functionality of existing surgical devices but also add new capabilities. MEMS with its tactile feed back nature have proved itself sound in surgical applications.
MEMS are used in distinguishing the tissues with the help of sensors which use different types of techniques. These tissues are identified taking consideration in to different quantities.
MEMS can improve surgical outcomes, lower risk and help control costs by providing surgeon with real time feed back on the operations.
MEMS have many applications in different fields such as biotechnology, communications, medical, automotive, telecommunications IT & space. For example in biotechnology these are used in DNA amplification, scanning and tunneling micro scopes. More over MEMS accelerometers are used for crash air bag development systems in automobiles.
Thus MEMS with all its features have a bright future in different fields.
