BIOMEDICAL WASTE DISPOSAL
INTRODUCTION:
The handling and disposal of bio-medical waste has become subject of increasing concern due to health hazard posed by communicable diseases. Agencies all over the world have taken up fight against this menace to public health and this has led to being enacted for proper management of this problem.
One of the major issues under discussion is who is responsible for hospitals waste management? There is no doubt that it is the responsibility of the generator. However the medical profession is to be blamed for their neglect of this important issue.
Waste requires management from generation through disposal. Every point in the pathway requires careful analysis & control systems. A well-planned strategy can result in the implementation of the cradle to grave concept of waste management in any health care facility. Any waste coming out of a hospital, not intended for further use in the hospital waste. Most of this waste can be discarded as municipal garbage. The main concern is waste that is hazardous or that which can cause an infection. This constitutes 5-10 % of waste generated by hospitals. The heart of the problem is dumping of this infectious hospital waste into common municipal garbage. The increasing use of disposable medical items is the latest solution to the waste issue.
Hospital waste management in India is an intractable problem. The need for waste management today reaches beyond hospitals & medical centers to smaller waste generators such as nursing homes, clinics & doctors offices.
In India, though some medical institutions have practiced disposal through incineration for than 20 years, the subject has come under focus since the Rules of July 1998. These have thrown possibilities of adopting different techniques as already in practice in other parts of world and also doing so on individual and collective basis. This seminar will present an over all review of the state of art knowledge on the different processes with case study on incineration.
