ABSTRACT:

During this time when the Internet provides essential communication between tens of millions of people and is being increasingly used as a tool for commerce, security becomes a tremendously important issue to deal with.

There are many aspects to security and many applications, ranging from secure commerce and payments to private communications and protecting passwords. One essential aspect for secure communications is that of cryptography.
This paper gives brief introduction to cryptography and then focuses on the purpose of the cryptography .This paper provides an insight to the history of cryptography and the cryptography in modern times.

The paper then gives a brief outlook of the most popular cryptographic techniques in use today. The paper describes some of the terms and concepts behind basic cryptographic methods and algorithms. The paper then explains about cryptanalysis and the need of cryptographic standards .This paper also covers a sample application of the three cryptographic techniques for secure communication. and various other applications.
The paper also includes the latest avenues of cryptography in the field of biometric analysis and DNA Computing.

This paper offers a way to compare the large number of cryptographic schemes in use today .This paper is very focused on terms, concepts, and schemes in current use and is not a detailed description of the whole field.
