DRY MACHINING

DRY MACHINING

INTRODUCTION:

‘Machining process is a Metal cutting operation by which finished surface of desired shape and dimensions is obtained by separating a layer from the parent work piece by pressing a wedge shape device called cutting tool to the work piece.’
Manufacturers all over the world are trying to discover new methods to eliminate the use of cutting fluids. According to studies carried out in United States of America 15% of the cost of the production is spent in purchase, storage, handling, utilizing and safe disposal of the fluid.
Although most shops might acknowledge the desirability of eliminating their cutting fluids, they are not sure they can. They believe that cutting fluids are necessary to reach the higher speeds and cut the harder materials that they must use to stay competitive. Many also perceive the costs of changing a wet operation to a dry one as high. But this is not true now days. In fact, machining dry should be routine practice in many operations especially in high speed. Moreover, turning hardened materials dry and milling at high speeds dry are not only possible but also profitable. The trick is to integrate the tools, machines, and cutting techniques correctly.
