SUSPENTION SYSTEM BASED ON MAGNETO-RHEOLOGICAL FLUID (MAGNETIC RIDE CONTROL)
ABSTRACT:
Shock absorbers are a key component of all automobiles. They control the vehicle's suspension movement to provide a stable, comfortable ride. Since they were installed on the first automobiles, the principle of shock absorber operation has remained essentially the same. Now a new type of shock absorber is entering, and it may change the way suspensions are controlled. They call it MagneRide. It is a continuously variable shock absorber that uses simple magnetic principles but very high technology to control suspensions. MagneRide provides the industry's first semi-active suspension technology with no electro-mechanical valves and no small moving parts. The MagneRide magneto-rheological (MR) fluid-based semi-active suspension system consists of MR fluid based mono tube struts, mono tube shock absorbers, a sensor set, and on-board controller.
Magnetic Ride Control will replace the Continuously Variable Road Sensing Suspension System. Although systems with variable dampers have existed in the past, this is the first one to dispense with electromechanical valves and small moving parts. Traditionally, dampers (shock absorbers/struts) have relied on the movement of a piston through a fluid-filled chamber. Piston movement is resisted and controlled by mechanical valves that limit the amount of fluid that can flow past the piston. In more sophisticated systems, computer controlled electromechanical valves are used to vary the flow rate. Now, the Magnetic Ride Control system eliminates even the valves.
