Admission to the Ph.D. Programme at various Centres of Excellence of IIT Rajasthan

IIT Rajasthan is committed to develop state of the art, research-led and multidisciplinary centres of
excellence where scholars from different disciplines will carry forward productive research on emerging
and important technological, scientific and social issues that characterize the challenges faced by the
contemporary world. Teaching and research activities of the institute especially for Postgraduate and
PhD Programmes are structured around various Centres of Excellence (CoEs) of the Institute. Each of
the CoE will include participation in selected domains from renowned academic and research
institutions or industry from within India and abroad, so as to carry out their research work in frontier
areas.

Centres of Excellence in

· Information and Communication Technology
· Energy

are being established in the first phase. These CoE with their multidisciplinary ethos, diversity and
multicultural work environment aim at transforming students into truly professional global citizens,
competent to address the challenges being faced by the Nation and the society at large.

Applications for admission to the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Programme of the two Centres of
Excellence are invited from the eligible candidates who have completed the prescribed
qualifying degree (Refer Section: Minimum Educational Qualifications). The applications are
accepted throughout the year. The candidates who are in the final semester of qualifying
degree also can apply for provisional admission.
Students admitted to the Ph.D. programme will have opportunity of interdisciplinary research within the
scope of on thematic area(s) identified by the respective CoE. Thus scholars have a unique option to
carry out research even beyond their basic disciplines/expertise in the qualifying degree.
Preference will be given to applicants whose academic background and credentials strongly exhibit the
potentials to carry out application based research in matching themes of the centres of excellence.
Prospective scholars, before applying, must go through the theme areas of research of centres of
excellence given at the end of this advertisement.

Note: For the exact dates and time-to-time announcements related to Ph.D. admissions, Please check this website regularly.

Uniqueness of Ph.D. programme at IIT Rajasthan

* Ph.D. students will carry out research only in the theme areas/ research proposals of the admitted Centre of Excellence for their doctoral dissertations irrespective of their basic disciplines/ specialization in the qualifying degree.
* An interdisciplinary doctoral committee shall be formed for each Ph.D. student to advise and guide the student to carry out his/her research work. The convener of the committee shall perform the role of primary advisor of the programme.
* Each Ph.D. student needs to successfully complete a set of prescribed courses (as recommended by the doctoral committee) followed by a comprehensive examination and state-of-the art seminar within first two or three semesters from his/her date of registration of the programme.

Centre of Excellence in Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

Vision

Education, knowledge, information and communication are at the core of human progress, endeavour and well-being. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has an immense impact on virtually all aspects of our lives. The rapid progress of ICT opens completely new opportunities to attain higher levels of development. The capacity of these technologies to reduce many traditional obstacles, especially those of time and distance, for the first time in history makes it possible to use the potential of these technologies for the benefit of millions of people in all corners of the world. That said, it is recognized that ICT should be regarded as a tool and not as an end in itself. Under favourable conditions, the technology can be a powerful instrument, increasing productivity, generating economic growth, job creation and employability and improving the quality of life of all. In this centre of excellence, we aim

· to harness the potential of technological advances to solve the existing socio-economic and environmental problems.

· to turn the digital divide into a digital opportunity for all through functionality driven low-cost hardware design.
· to develop a breeding ground for learners, developers, contributors, entrepreneurs and decision-makers.
· to work in the direction of building an inclusive society with the participation of Government, Private Sector and International Organizations.

Research Themes and Goals

At CoE in ICT, the research focus is “Functionality and Cost-Driven” Research and Development. Capturing the requirements and specifying the functionality of the devices/technologies is the starting point of any problem statement. The primary agenda to carry out research on developing low-cost device design and technology development to fulfil the social requirements. So at the technology standpoint, we stress on Embedded Design, System Integration and Hardware Benchmarking. The mentioned theme sets the following set of research areas and goals for us.

· Developing low-cost networking solutions – cheaper Internet everywhere.
· Developing low-cost access devices.
· Developing low-cost e-Healthcare solutions.

o Computer Vision/ Signal Processing/ Medical Imaging

· Hardware Design and Benchmarking.

o Embedded Systems

§ Low cost Access Devices for Education/Health Monitoring

o Micro/ Nano-Electronics

§ System-on-Chip

§ EDA tools

o Instrumentation and Testing

o Robotics and Automation

o Biomimetics

· Sustaining environment through ICT.

o Networks/ Sensor Networks

The CoE-ICT is an inter-disciplinary venture. It hosts the top-notch scientists with a background ranging from Mathematical Sciences, Natural Sciences to very applied fields of Systems Engineering, and other disciplines of Engineering. Since it works to solve social problems, and these problems are highly inter-disciplinary in nature, you are encouraged to participate in CoE-ICT if you satisfy minimum qualifications.

Centre of Excellence in Energy

Vision

Sustainable infrastructure development is essential for the economic growth and well-being of any country. Energy security is at the core of this effort. IIT Rajasthan intends to provide solutions to the acute problems that humankind is facing due to the gradual depletion of the earth's finite energy resources which are largely non-renewable (fossil fuels). Deploying renewable energy technologies is at the heart of this endeavour as they have a much lower environmental impact than the conventional energy technologies. Exploiting the role of renewable energy in sustainable urban and rural infrastructure development is the central theme of the centre of excellence (CoE) in Energy. IIT Rajasthan is located in Jodhpur, the sun city of India. Hence harnessing solar energy to generate power is one of the primary objectives of this CoE. IIT Rajasthan has earmarked a 200 acre land on its permanent campus for creating a solar park, comprising all the existing technologies under one roof. The power generated from such solar plants can be used with in the local communities employing micro and DC smart grids. Excess power can be fed to the national grid. The waste energy from the solar power plant will be utilised to heat/cool the main campus, thereby demonstrating the concept of green campus. It is also envisaged that electric vehicles run by power storage devices (Batteries/fuel cells) will be integrated with solar micro-grids. IIT Rajasthan has the ambition of building its main campus driven by renewable energy sources, thereby contributing to the global cause of minimizing global warming, CO2 emission and ecology imbalance. An international centre for solar energy technologies will be set up on the IIT Rajasthan campus for man power development and promoting innovation and entrepreneurship. A special emphasis shall be laid on training experts in indigenous design and manufacturing of components of solar power plants.

Research Themes and Goals

• Indigenous manufacture and design of solar thermal plant components/ technologies
• Green Campus as a living laboratory:

By introducing electric vehicles

DC appliance design powered by photovoltaic panels

Energy efficient buildings which exploit solar passive architecture

• DC smart grids, micro grids comprising of solar thermal and PV power plants
• Research and development in electrochemical power sources
• Novel heat exchanger systems such as air-cooled condensers
• Materials development for PV, Organic PV and Solar thermal power plants for improving efficiency and reliability
• Testing and calibration of solar devices
• Virtual solar lab for device simulation and optimization
• Lithium ion batteries and fuel cells as back up power and thermal storage devices
• Water splitting and hydrogen storage employing photocatalyst in visible region of the spectrum
• Waste heat management and power generation in few hundred watts via thermocells, phase change materials and thermoelectric coolers
