AICTE Winter School on Digital Art & Design At IIT Kharagpur

Course Overview:
The primary objectives of the present course on Digital Art & Design (DAAD) Program are two:
* To re-invigorate the original principles of creativity through state-of the art-technology that is evolving in the digital world.
* To steer the participants through a preparative platform for employment and subsequent showcasing of deliverables (products, publications, reviews, and audio-visual cuts) in the diverse fields of architectural services, design, allied computer graphics and multimedia industries associated with event management and the publication world.
However, the course is specifically designed in such a way that even lay-people with only a basic grounding in computers can take this course and develop a working knowledge in the field.
In a package, the participants will be imparted a fundamental understanding, working knowledge, and skill to work with diverse aspects of art and design in the technological age.
The course assimilates participants from diverse streams, creates a cooperative platform, and will help expose students to a variety of computer graphic software applications; and lead to the development of sound visual communications and problem solving skills. It will also help explore digital art and graphic design both as a profession and as a hobby, to bring in variety in life and living culture. Find software tools and tips for creating original computer graphics and digital art, plus information for getting started in a graphic design or computer graphics career.
As tangibles, the course expects to achieve the following:
* Develop a brief but comprehensive understanding of visual aesthetic principles along with skills to apply them to various areas starting from architectural drawing, design, modelling, and product design to photography, presentations, brochures and WebPages.
* To bring art (aesthetic principles and understanding, artistic skills, story-writing etc) and technology (digital design, image processing, computer graphics, animation, camera work and post processing, etc) together creatively.

* AICTE faculty from other fields as well
* Sponsored candidates
* Selected few B.Tech IIT students
How to Apply:
Please download the form and send it to us by registed/speed post. Send a scanned copy of the form (optional) as well. The number of the participants will be limited to 30. The selection will be made on the basis of qualifications and experience.
Course Contents:
The broad areas of the course have been designed to assimilate multi-faceted ability to understand, critique and work with modern technology in the context of as diverse fields as art and design, architecture, product design, modeling, engineering design, and diverse other types of designs.
* Aesthetics and design principles (10 hours)
o Aesthetic principles
o Visual perception
o Composition
o Design basics
This would include developing a concept of what makes things beautiful, appealing, enjoyable and what visual principles are involved in the process of art creation and appreciation
* Digital Photography (10 hours)
o The History of photography and digital photography
o Genre photography
o Working with a digital camera
o Post-processing (Photoshop, etc)
This would initiate the participants into the world of digital photography, working with digital cameras, manipulating images and making them print/web ready.
* Iconography and commercial art (8 hours)
o History of Iconography
o Avenues of commercial art
o Creative paths
o Deliverables
We like in a world of brands and advertisements. These are primarily visually oriented. Selling anything involves looking at visually stimulating signs, icons and symbols that can be recalled easily. This part of the course would focus on commercial art and design which has wide applications in the business world starting from presentations to design of brochures, ads, etc.
* Modern Application of Art from History of Architecture

* 2-D graphics (10 hours)
o Understanding 2-D graphics and its uses
o Working with Autocad
o Working with CorelDraw & Illustrator
o Photoshop and 2d graphics
This part of the course would impart to the participants necessary skills to put their learning into practice by learning 2-D graphic software to design anything from webpage to advertisements.
* Fundamentals of movie making and animation movies (10 hours)
o Film appreciation
o Narrative
o Working with a script
o Time-line and editing
A fascinating aspect of contemporary visual culture is the desire and ability to control moving images, and to tell stories not through texts but visuals. This part of the course would introduce the participants to the various theoretical constructs that are prerequisites for making a good visual narration (even through PPT) be it through videography or animation.
* Making a movie (15 hours)
o Working with the script
o Shooting
o Post-production
This part of the course would take the participants through hands on experience of making a short movie. It would involve visits to and assistance of CET.
* Making an animation (15 hours)
o Working with Flash
o Drawing the central characters
o Working with the script
o Time-line and rendering
This module would provide participants with enough skills to make small animations for a variety of contexts and uses like business, art, architecture and scientific animations.
* Introduction to 3-D modeling and rendering (10 hours)
o Introduction to 3-D animation
o Introduction to 3-D Max
o Introduction to Maya 3D
This module would provide a bird’s-eye-view of the state-of-the-art 3-D animation used in movies, and would provide a working skill of developing, rendering and animating 3-D objects.
Registration:
All the participants have to be registered for the winter school. The teachers from the AICTE sponsored colleges/universities /NITs/IITs need not pay the registration fee. The selected candidates will be reimbursed 2nd class to and fro railway fare via shortest route. Accommodation and food will be free.
Self-financed candidates will have to pay a course fee of Rs. 7000 for the course which would also include course material, course kit and CD. The institute will arrange accomodation for them but they will have to pay separately for their stay and food. A demand draft in the name of CEP-STC, IIT Kharagpur must be sent along with the completed form.
