Alternative fuels

Alternative fuels

ABSTRACT:

Ever since the Industrial Revolution, humans have been dependant on using energy in order to fuel their economies and make their lives easier. Unfortunately, in doing so, there have been several unforeseen side effects. Economically, we need to utilize new and renewable types of energy, as our supplies of many current types of energy are very limited. Environmentally, types of energy such as those that burn fossil fuels has been greatly affecting and damaging our planet. Levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases have increased greatly in our atmosphere, leading to global warming and damaging many ecosystems and types of life. Eventually, this could threaten the sustainability of humans on Earth. Cars, vans, trucks and buses, and other on-road vehicles using traditional fuels produce more than 60 percent of all carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HCs) at 29 percent and nitrogen oxides (NOx) at 31 percent, which are the major ingredients of unhealthful ground level.
Demand for gasoline has been the driving force in utilization and depletion of crude petroleum, which is a non-renewable resource. In recent years, tendencies have just begun, favor alternative fuels to power autos. Alternative fuels are substantially non-petroleum and yield energy security and environmental benefits. Many possible alternative fuels exist, certainly not without their drawbacks. As mentioned above, drawbacks do exist; the chief drawbacks being cost of adaption implementation, engineering, and cost of the fuels. Thus, it is important to compare all types of energy, in order to determine the best ones, economically and environmentally, short term and long term.
