FUEL CELL AS ALTERNATIVE FUEL

ABSTRACT:

Noiseless operation, smooth & higher acceleration and echo-friendly operation is the requirement of modern automobiles. The vehicle powered by an internal combustion engines is having certain disadvantages Like noise, vibrations & limited acceleration due to reciprocating engine mechanism and generation of hazards elements like CO, UBHC & Nox due to use of fossil fuels and its incomplete combustion. To overcome these problems researchers and vehicle manufactures are trying different alternatives fuels and power plants. Some of the promising alternative fuels are CNG, ethanol, methanol, methane, hydrogen and power plants like electric motor powered by battery, with sources as solar energy and fuel cell.

To overcome the dependence on fossil fuel and to overcome global warming problem vehicles are designed to run on electric motor powered by battery as a source of electric energy. These vehicles are totally pollution free but runs for approximately 150 kilometers per charge and needed to be recharged frequently. Also life of batteries used for automobile has limited of about three years. Secondly most of the part of electrical energy needed to recharge battery is produced from fossil fuel, which increase global warming.

Fuel Cell technology is changing automobile scenario. Vehicles operating on Fuel Cell use electric motor as a drive and are proved pollution free. Unlike battery driven vehicle Fuel Cell Vehicles not require recharging. Hydrogen and air serves purpose of energy generation. As hydrogen is abundantly available in nature it will prove inexhaustible source of fuel to the vehicles.
