BACKGROUND

As more than 60% of India is at risk to damaging earthquakes of a design intensity of 7 or higher on the modified mercalli intensity scale, education, training and research in earthquake engineering is essential. Recently, the Latur (1993) and Bhuj (2001) earthquakes as well as the Sumatra tsunami (2005), the Samoa Islands tsunami (2009), the Haiti earthquake (2010), and Chile & Sumatra earthquakes (2010) have resulted in devastating losses of life and property. The collapse and damage sustained by modern buildings and inadequate construction or retrofitting of many buildings are of concern around the world. Hence, there is an urgent need to mitigate damage to buildings and infrastructure and further protect lives. Structures and lifelines designed for typical loading are often badly damaged or can collapse during earthquakes. Thus, ensuring that there is adequate performance of systems during strong ground shaking is paramount to the overarching goal of earthquake engineers and a focus of this conference. It is also necessary to monitor the performance of the structures and investigate retrofitting techniques required for strengthening and performance enhancement. The subject of earthquake engineering requires a multi-disciplinary approach. Apart from civil and structural engineers, geologists and seismologists also play a crucial role in providing the expertise relating to the generation and occurrence of earthquakes. The coordination of expertise within a multi-disciplinary group of experts and the synthesis of their approach with that of the entities, i.e. government and code officials, responsible for implementation is essential.

SPECIAL SESSIONS

The following special sessions are arranged in addition to the theme of the conference.

1. Performance based seismic design around the world.
2. Lessons learned from the Haiti and Chilean earthquakes
3. Seismic protective systems: base isolation and supplemental damping
4. Lifeline engineering Pipelines
5. Performance of bridges during earthquakes
6. Full-scale shake table testing
7. Hybrid Testing
8. International collaborative research and opportunities- Panel discussion
