National Conference on Sustainable Development in Energy Sector At University of Petroleum & Energy Studies, Dehradun
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN ENERGY SECTOR
Energy is one of the major inputs for the economic development of any country. The energy sector assumes a critical importance in view of the ever-increasing energy needs requiring huge investments to meet them. Countries are facing formidable challenges in meeting their energy needs and in providing adequate energy of desired quality in various forms in a sustainable manner and at competitive prices. The requirement is that, it must be met through safe, clean and convenient forms of energy at the least cost in a technically efficient,
economically viable and environmentally sustainable manner.
China and India due to their fast growing economy, drive the global energy demand, with fossil fuels
accounting for over one-half of the increase in total primary energy demand.
For India, it needs to sustain an 8% to 10% economic growth rate, over the next 25 years, if it is to
eradicate poverty and meet its human development goals. To deliver a sustained growth rate of 8%
through 2031-32 and to meet the lifeline energy needs of all citizens, India needs, at the very least, to
increase its primary energy supply by 3 to 4 times and, its electricity generation capacity/supply by 5
to 6 times of their 2003-04 levels.
While the energy needs of the country, are going to increase at a rapid rate in the coming decades, the
energy resources that are indigenously available are limited and may not be sufficient to sustain the
process of economic development.
India is no more an emerging leader but has emerged as a global leader, and to sustain this position it is needed to find out ways to massively scale sustainable energy initiatives.
Past experiences has shown us that we need to step out of conventional thinking for transition to happen, we ought to step outside the box. For existence of future generations, energy transition from the conventional fossil fuels to sustainable energy is of paramount importance to fuel our economy, cure the environment and offer a secure future for the generations to come.
“This earth provides enough to satisfy every one’s need not every man’s greed” said Mahatma Gandhi.
To meet the energy needs technology innovation and industrialization has led to the indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources. The unprecedented exploitation needs to be sustainable in the sense of catering to both present and future needs of people.
