Short Term Course on Environment Management in Process Industries National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar

ABOUT NIT JALANDHAR

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar was established in the year 1987 as Regional
Engineering College and was given the status of National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar by the Government under the aegis of Ministry of Human Resource Development, (Government of India), New Delhi on October 17, 2002. As National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar, the institute has a responsibility of providing high quality technical education in Engineering and Technology to produce competent technical manpower for the country. The institute offers B. Tech. programme in nine disciplines of Engineering and Technology along with the Research programme leading to M. Tech. and Ph. D. degree. As per the survey conducted by AC NIELSEN-ORG-MARG in the year 2006, the institute has been ranked fourth amongst all NITs and eighteenth amongst all engineering institutions including IITs in the country.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Chemical Engineering, the then Department of Chemical and Bio Engineering has been
offering B. Tech. in Chemical and Bio Engineering since 1989, B. Tech in Chemical Engineering w.e.f. the batch admitted in the year 2008, M. Tech. in Chemical Engineering and Ph. D. degrees. The course curriculum has been designed catering to the existing and emerging needs of the industry. The Department has established state-of-the art laboratories with sophisticated equipment for undergraduate courses and research work.

LOCATION

The institute is located at a distance of 12 km from Jalandhar Bus Stand, 10 km from Jalandhar City Railway
Station and 16 km from Jalandhar Cantt. railway station. The city has major road and rail connection, is a market for agricultural products and manufactures including textiles, leather goods, wood products and sports goods. Jalandhar is an important station in Amritsar - New Delhi railway route. Jalandhar is situated 150 kms from Chandigarh and 60 kms from Ludhiana.

OBJECTIVES

The tremendous increase in world population needs greater requirement of resources to improve human life.
However, this in turn has resulted into a tremendous load on mother earth. Process industries are a major source of hazardous and non-hazardous pollutants. It is, therefore, important to balance the economic growth with the conservation of natural resources. Process industries need to switch over to the environmentally benign technologies. It is important to practice efficient management methods in processes for waste minimization, to develop cost effective waste treatment technologies, and to provide better working conditions to the workers in regard to health and safety. The objectives of the above course are
to bridge the gap between the academia and the industry, and to update the knowledge and skills of the technical teachers and process engineers in the current and emerging issues related to the areas of environment, health and safety.

The following topics, but not limited to, are proposed to
be covered during the short term course:
