National Seminar on Green Energy for Empowering Rural India At Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad

About the Seminar

Indian Institute of Information Technology Allahabad [IIIT-A] and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Information Technology Amethi [RGIIT] are organizing a National Seminar on ‘Green Energy: Empowering Rural India’ on April 15 and April 16, 2011, at RGIIT, Amethi. This is the second Seminar under the IIIT-A’s ‘Green Energy’ initiative.

The key themes of the Seminar are:

 Harnessing of renewable energy for Rural India:
o Improving health, education, nutrition and economy
o Integrated Rural Development
o Employment generation
 Green Energy initiatives of the Ministry of New and Renewal Energy [MNRE], NGOs and Corporate India for
Rural India
 Role of Academic Institutions in making available their programs to satisfy the felt need of Rural Sectors.

The Institute has organized, since inception of RGIIT in 2005, a number of S & T National and International Seminars on different aspects for Empowerment of Rural India and has set up Discovery Park towards the same goal.

Need of the Seminar

Energy is an essential ingredient to improve the quality of our lives. With the gradual depletion of the traditional resources for generation of power, and with the environmental pollution caused by conventional power generation, emphasis is being placed on tapping green energy source namely solar, wind, hydro, bio-mass, geothermal and bio-fuels, all over the world. Thus emphasis is being placed on harnessing the potential of renewable energy sources for the benefit of humanity. As academia constitutes an important segment of our society and with the power to influence the society through research and education, this seminar focuses the attention of the academia on Green Energy, and encourage them to create awareness in the society and get them actively involved in research and development programs that would benefit 80% of the inhabitants of our country.

Some of the facts are mind boggling:

 Electricity Scenario in India
o Installed Capacity:1,56,092 MW
 63.2% Thermal
 24.2% Hydro
 10% Non Conventional Energy
 2.6% Nuclear
o 75% of household energy in consumption in Rural India is by traditional sources 458 MT per annum:
 Fire wood: 251.90 MT per annum
 Agriculture waste 99.30 MT per annum
 Dung cake 107.00 MT per annum
o Only 83.1% villages are electrified: 56% households do not have access to electricity
 Green Job Potential: 100,000 jobs in solar energy within the next ten years [National Solar Mission document]
 MNRE has planned a target capacity addition of 10,000 MW during the 11th five year plan

Objectives and Expectations from the Seminar

Seminar will give the participants a comprehensive overview of the current status of Green Energy within India and abroad and how it can empower our society to improve the quality of our lives and of our future generations. After participating in the deliberations of the Seminar, it is envisaged that the participants will be in a position to (a) initiate Green Energy initiatives in their locations; (b) participate in activities
coordinated by Government of India, IIIT-A and their institutions; and (c) advocate for Green Energy schemes to the target groups. Seminar will be making specific recommendations to the Government and target groups to build awareness in communities for green energy creation and utilization.

Methodology

The deliberations of the Seminar would include presentations and discussions by experts and participants: group discussions and case studies, IIIT-A has initiated Green Energy projects and is in the process of installing Solar Water heater and cookers for generating Green Energy for its facilities at RGIIT. IIIT-A has identified Green Energy products for Rural India. Some of these products will be demonstrated in this Seminar.

Participant Profile

This seminar will be particularly helpful to the change agents in academia and industry, the administrators of universities, colleges and schools, and the influential sections of the rural population.

Contents

Deliberations of the Seminar will be in seven sessions. First session will be devoted to the discussions on an overview of Green Energy in India through presentations by experts followed by a panel discussion and identification of issues that we need to address. Technological innovations in harnessing Green Energy for Rural India will be presented in Session 2. Solar Energy and progress made by National Solar Mission and State Governments will be presented in Session 3. What solutions have been implemented and planned for the Empowerment of Rural India through the natural resources will be the focus of Session 4. Green Energy products developed for Rural India will be demonstrated in Session 5. Green energy would facilitate availability of health and education services and create employment opportunities in Rural India. Academia would be required to play an important role in the development and training of manpower. This would be brought out in session 6.
