Managing Corporate Travel GHG Emissions

Managing Corporate Travel GHG Emissions

In response to climate change, International regulatory bodies, in tandem with regional governments are developing multilateral adaptation and mitigation strategies towards ensuring a reduction in global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally. Travel and transportation industry alone, in 2007, contributed to 13.1% of global GHG emissions, and were responsible for 61% of global oil usage. Since most of the travel and transportation is for movement of goods and business people, it is imperative for not just travel and transportation industry, but for all corporations worldwide to manage their corporate travel, in an eco-sustainable manner.

This paper is meant for operational leaders of all corporations, as well as the strategic leadership of Travel Management Companies to urge a paradigm shift in sustainable management of corporate travel.

This paper proposes a “shift in approach” from corporation-centric travel management model, to travel-distribution-centric model in managing corporate GHG emissions. Through this renewed mechanism, Travel Management Companies (TMCs) and corporations can work together to reduce, Measure, Report, Verify (MRV) corporate business travel GHG emissions. The paper elaborates on the shift in responsibilities of both TMCs and corporations, creating value for both, specifically encompassing the following:

MRV emissions – As part of the service portfolio, along with transaction-based carbon-footprint details, TMCs should include 3rd party certification and verification offerings.

Reduce emissions - Organizations and TMCs must work together, to ensure that corporate travel transactions; aviation, local transit, accommodation, etc. are based upon both, cost and carbon, parameters.

Through this thought leadership paper, TCS proposes that TMCs are in a strategic position to leverage the scope of their activities towards managing corporate eco-sustainable GHG emissions. IT plays a critical role in supporting smooth operation of this framework, and can create economic and ecological value, for both the TMC, and corporations simultaneously.
