Eco Friendly Cars

Eco Friendly Cars

INTRODUCTION

We have witnessed tremendous growth in automobiles in last few decades. In the new century, achieving tighter emission norms and fuel economy are bound to be the main areas of growth in automotive technology.

In today’s world, air pollution is the major threat to the mankind. Automobile emissions have the largest contribution in air pollution. The most harmful elements in these emissions are CO2, CO, NOx, various types of hydrocarbons, SOx, particulate matter, Thexzse emissions are very hazardous to human health and give rise to many deadly diseases. They also cause global warming, acid rains etc, which have detrimental effects on the whole ecosystem.

Ever since we have recognized this problem, there have been continuous efforts in direction of minimizing these emissions. Many countries are imposing progressively stringent norms for emissions control. With the advent of new technology it has been possible to meet these requirements.

In early days some favorable modifications were made in conventional design of I.C. engines to reduce emissions. Also some new techniques were introduced to convert more harmful emissions into fairly less harmful bye-products. Research in the area of fuels lead to invention of some alternate fuels.

Major breakthrough was achieved when concept of electric cars was implemented. This was worlds first zero emission car. But there are some practical limitations for commercial use of these vehicles. Thus hybrid cars came into picture, which is a combination of gasoline engine and electric battery. Due to efficient use of gasoline engine emission level of these cars is within acceptable limits.

The measures to limit the emission level in automobiles, and concept of green cars like electric and hybrid cars are discussed in the following sections. Also the working of one of the presently used hybrid cars, Honda Insight is discussed in detail.
