METAL MATRIX COMPOSITES
ABSTRACT
We have entered a new era in Mechanical Engineering design, based on the unique and tailor-able properties of composite materials. These properties include exceptional strength and stiffness, fatigue and corrosion resistance, low density and coefficient of thermal expansion. These new materials give the designer the ability to design higher density systems by matching the material characteristics of all parts within the system. Composites technology provides us with the ability to create new multifunctional materials with unique combinations of mechanical and physical properties (e.g. high thermal conductivity and low coefficient of thermal expansion). These characteristics, combined with low cost, near net-shape manufacturing processes, provide a limitless potential for new materials and applications. In this presentation, we consider properties of metal matrix composites (MMCs). We look at the basic concepts, properties, manufacturing processes and applications of metal matrix composites. And finally, we look at future trends and challenges faced.
