International Conference on Renewable Energy Technology ( ICORET - 2011) At PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore

The Conference

Energy is an important input for economic development but today, the world's energy supply is largely based on fossil fuels and nuclear power. These source of energy will not last forever and are the proven contributors to environmentall degradation. this has led to the governments and industries around the globe thinking serious about alternative sources of energy. This along with declining availability of the fossil fuels have led to the development of renewable energy resources such as biomass, biofuels, wind, solar, geothermal, and hydro energy etc.

Current global trends in energy supply and consumption are not sustainable - environmentally, econoimically, socially but this situation can be changed if we can secure the supply of reliable and affordable energy and effect a rapid transformation to a low-carbon, efficient and environmentally benign system of energy supply. Since exhaustible energy sources are limited, there is an urgent need to focus attention on development of renewable energy source and use of energy efficient technologies. It is estimated that renewable energy could contribute to at least half of all electric power in each of the large economies by 2050.

India is blessed with an abundance of sunlight, water and biomass. Vigorous efforts taken in the past two decades are now bearing fruits as people in all walks of life are aware of the benefits of renewable energy, especially in the decentralized energy systems, which are urgently required in all villages and in urban or semi-urban centers. India has the world's largest programme on renewable energy. The Government of India has created an exclusive Department of Non-conventional Energy Sources(DNES) in 1982 to promote, develop and commercialize the use of renewable energy sources. In 1992, a full-fledged Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources (MNES) was established.

School of Energy (SOE)

SCHOOL OF ENERGY(SOE)

The School of Energy was initiated in the year 1999 and is committed to excellence in education and research to emerge as global leaders in enhancing in energy sectors and blending modern technologies with management to facilitate interventions that are instrument in enhancing capacities for socially, economically and environmentally sound development in partnership with public and private sectors. The major areas in which the department concentrates are Energy Audit, Environmental Engineering, Renewable Energy Sources, Energy Management Information Systems,Industrial Energy Conservation and Management and CFD Analysis.

School of Energy has a well equipped CFD laboratory for doing fluid flow and heat transfer analysis. A well equipped solar thermal and photovoltaic and biomass gasifier laboratory with outdoor testing area for teaching and research is also available in the Energy Park which was established with financial assistance from Ministry of New and Renewable Energy [MNRE], Government of India (GOI), New Delhi. School of Energy has signed MoUs with organizations like IGCAR-Kalpakkam, AIT-Bangkok, REEEP-Vienna, GNESD-Denmark, SESI-New Delhi, IREDA-New Delhi, MNRE(India), TEDA, DRDA-Coimbatore and C-WET-Chennai. So far SOE has carried out 8 major projects funded by different funding agencies like DST,TEDA,etc.,
