PROLOGUE
Mechanical Engineering
Department of National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur is organizing two days
workshop on Exploring Science of Transportation Systems which is one of the most
current research issue among transportation Industry which encompasses all
modes of transportation (Road, Railways, Defence and Aviation) and all modes of
planning, during April 11th –12th , 2013. We look forward to your participation
and support in making this Workshop a success.
THEME & OBJECTIVES
Issues related to research
methodology increasingly occupy a central role in the field of Transportation Systems
(TS). It is becoming clear that greater attention to methodological issues is
essential for the development of this field into Aviation, Railways and Road
transportation systems. Many efforts have been made to distinguish this discipline
of transportation systems from other related disciplines. However, the field is
still criticized for lack of theories and absence of paradigm. A recent survey
of literature noted that the field has made more progress in identifying
research questions than in answering them. This is largely because of methodological
issues such as poor formulation & choice of methodology and lack of
theoretical foundation. Such issues continue to plague this research. Research
in Transportation Systems is at critical cross roads today, with increased
emphasis on developing theoretical concepts and testing empirical relationships
rooted in such concepts. Such a transformation critically depends on
conceptualizing, measuring & analyzing the role of Transportation Systems
and its derivative constructs in transportation industry. It has always been
difficult to assess the direct benefits and impact of transportation systems
investment. Measuring effectiveness of transportation systems has consistently
been ranked as one of the top five issues ever since its foray into realms of transportation
planning. As increased competition has forced aviation players to closely
scrutinize all investments, the issue therefore has become even more critical.
The need is to explore the science of Transportation Systems to make these
modes more effective and efficient. This workshop also aims on evolving the
exploratory areas in the sphere of Transportation Systems where Institution faculty
can also contribute to make this discipline more powerful. This workshop primarily
addresses the following objectives:
• To induce innovation in operational and control mechanisms
of all modes of transportation systems (present and prospective).
• To explore fundamental theories coupled with observational
and experimental studies of transportation phenomena & processes.
• To discuss mathematical models, advanced methodologies
for sensitive issues in transportation systems analysis, design &
optimization.
• To do strategic, tactical, economical and
operational transportation planning.
• To plan, design and construct runways/ highways
• To explore Energy and Environmental issues among Transportation
Systems
ISSUES FOR DISCUSSION
System Design and Technology
