AIRBAGS IN AUTOMOBILES

AIRBAGS IN AUTOMOBILES

Automotive safety has been the concern of the leading automobile manufactures for a long time. With the help of modern technology, scientist and engineers have developed many safety devices which help to save the human life in case of an accident or an emergency.
Using airbags is one such type of safety system. The development of the Air bag has taken many years and is still being refined. Their purpose is to restrain automobile drivers and passengers in a collision, regardless of seat belts. Air bags are designed for frontal impact crashes, the kind of crashes which account for more than half of all passenger vehicle occupant deaths. Air bags are designed to limit head and chest injuries. But they only supplement safety belts, they do not replace them. One or more sensors detect intensity and direction of vehicle deceleration during a collision. The sensor sends an electric signal to start a chemical reaction that inflates the air bag with harmless nitrogen gas.
For easy reading of this article it is divided into various sections. It begins with an introduction followed by construction, principle, working, various types of airbags, the Indian scenario and some recent examples proving the utility and importance of airbags. This article also shows demerits of airbags and efforts done to remove them.
