CORROSION OF REINFORCEMENT IN CONCRETE STRUCTURES
ABSTRACT
Concrete structures are exposed to simultaneous action of interactive, chemical agencies and physical forces like stress, hot weather, carbonation and drying, which are not reflected in control laboratory tests. Corrosion of concrete in reinforcing bars in corrosive environments is a matter of grave concern to the designers. Traditional methods of relying purely on concrete cover have not proved successful and expectation of long service life has been shattered. The economic costs have been very high and in certain cases this has sadly resulted in human fatalities.
This paper discusses the factors responsible for corrosion of reinforcement of concrete. In the present paper we attempt to provide the measures available in design to mitigate the effects of corrosion . Traditional measures are not covered in detail and the newer technologies and materials are featured.
